Athletes who compete in any Olympic Games represent the National Olympic Committees (NOCs) affiliated with their respective countries or territories, as stipulated by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The IOC oversees the Games as part of its broader management of the Olympic brand. It recognizes 206 national committees worldwide and the Refugee Olympic Team, each regarded as its own delegation.
For the 2024 Paris Olympics, approximately 10,500 athletes from 205 delegations, including the refugee team, will participate, according to the organizers. Later in the summer, around 4,000 athletes from nearly as many delegations will compete in the Paralympics.
During the Opening Ceremony on the Seine, all delegations with at least one representative will be introduced, even those sending just a single athlete or a small team. Additionally, the organisers said around 120 heads of state, sovereigns, and heads of government are expected to attend.
